Sammy Winward Body and Soul

Emmerdale actress SAMMY WINWARD, 23, on being beautiful on a budget

HANDS "I bite my nails so I have to wear false ones. I'm a fan of Broadway Natural Deceptions Nail Kit, £6.84. I don't like long white tips so I file them down."

SKIN "I used to splash out on expensive moisturisers like La Prairie, but with the credit crunch, it pays to cut back. I now use Sanctuary Protective 24-Hour Moisture Lotion SPF15, £11.99, which gives me a great glow, plus added sun protection."

HAIR "Highlighted blonde hair like mine can look greasy when the roots start growing out, so I use Batiste Dry Shampoo in Blush, £2.05, to reduce the appearance of shine. I don't spend a fortune on expensive hair products - I love Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Shampoo, £1.99."

BREASTS "I became a mum at 19. I breastfed my daughter Mia, but thankfully it didn't affect the shape of my boobs. I'm only a 30B but I'd never have implants. I hate the idea of having plastic inside me and I actually prefer the look of small boobs."

BODY "My skin's really sensitive and body lotions and perfume can irritate it. So I spray scent on my clothes instead - I actually think it smells nicer that way. I love Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum, £55."

Winward expects ratings boost

Dales star Winward expects ratings boost

Emmerdale star Sammy Winward has predicted that the soap's scheduling revamp will result in a ratings boost.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the ITV1 show's one-hour Tuesday evening episode would be scrapped in favour of two airings on Thursdays, going out at 7pm and 8pm.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street's Wednesday night edition has been shifted to 8.30pm on Thursdays, making way for ITV's football coverage.

Winward, who plays Emmerdale's Katie Sugden, has now revealed that she is feeling optimistic about the changes, which make their debut this week.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, she explained: "It's a bigger deal for Corrie, but it's great for us because we have a later spot now, which is what we've always wanted. You get higher viewing figures. And I think it's good to keep things fresh."

She added: "I'm excited about my character too. Katie's starting a new relationship, but she's trying to act all cool. Basically, it's all going to kick off and blow up in her face.

"Long term, I'm in Emmerdale until December, then after that I don't know. It's up to the producers."

Winward on Katies Relationship

Winward looking forward to Katie's relationship

Emmerdale actress Sammy Winward has expressed her delight at her character's new forthcoming romance.

The 23-year-old's Yorkshire counterpart Katie Sugden has recently been caught between Lee Naylor (Lewis Linford) and Nathan Wylde (Lyndon Ogbourne), but one of the show's newcomers will soon be vying for her attention.

When Ryan Lamb (James Sutton) moves into the village with his mother Faye (Kim Thomson), it's not long before he's pursuing her.

Speaking to DS at the Inside Soap Awards launch, she said: "I'm quite looking forward to it because it's going to be a relationship where they can get on really well as opposed to bicker and argue, so I think - and I hate the word banter - I think there'll be some banter between them. And James is great and brilliant to work with, so it's going to be really good fun."

Corrie moved from Wednesday night slot

Corrie is losing its traditional Wednesday evening slot for the first time in nearly 50 years in a huge ITV1 soap shake-up.

The midweek show is moving to 8.30pm on Thursdays - after two 30-minute episodes of Emmerdale.

It will allow ITV1 to screen football matches on Wednesday evenings without disrupting soap schedules as often happens now.

A station spokesman said: "Thursday evenings on ITV1 will be a great showcase for soap from Weatherfield and The Woolpack."

But it will be a wrench for Street fans as the show loses the Wednesday evening slot it has had since its launch in 1960 - and through the era of stalwarts such as brassy Elsie Tanner and battleaxe Ena Sharples. At present ITV's only Thursday night soap is Emmerdale at 7pm. From July 23, there will be a second episode from The Woolpack at 8pm, Corrie's new 8.30pm slot, then an hour of The Bill from 9pm.

And Emmerdale's present hourlong Tuesday night show will be cut to just half an hour.

To mark the historic switch, Street star Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre, and Emmerdale's Sammy Winward, who plays Katie Sugden, posed for a photoshoot yesterday.

Crucially, the revamp means both of their programmes will avoid clashing with the Beeb's EastEnders on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Itv denied that was a factor and insisted: "It's primarily because of the football and to stop the soaps being moved around." But a BBC source crowed: "They've finally realised EastEnders is a bigger soap."

Meanwhile, police drama The Bill, on air for 25 years, will get a new theme tune in a revamp that will see it become a once-a-week show.

Executive producer Jonathan Young said: "The heart will remain the same but it will look very fresh."

Sammy Winward Soap Awards

Sammy Winward attends the Inside Soap Awards launch party as nominations are announced at the Great John Street Hotel on July 6, 2009 in Manchester.

Some of our best-loved TV stars put on their glad rags last night for the launch of the Inside Soap Awards.

At least Corrie babes Kym Marsh, Michelle Keegan, Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson didn't have far to go to the reception to hear the nominees.

It was held in Manchester near the Granada studios - just as well given the height of the girls' killer heels. Michelle, who is up for Sexiest Female, said: "It's very flattering."

They rubbed shoulders with actors from rival soaps Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, although EastEnders couldn't make it. Vote now for the Awards, held on September 28 in London.
